Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat unsightly superficial veins. Leg veins are the most commonly treated. Medication is injected into the vein, which causes the vein to close, shrink then disappear.

Sclerotherapy may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.
Sclerotherapy should not be used on patients who are pregnant or nursing, have a history of allergy to sclerosant or similar substances, have a history of blood clots or inflammation in the deep leg veins.
